ISTANBUL/WASHINGTON: Iran and the United States sent positive signals on Wednesday about the possibility of fresh talks on the Iranian nuclear program, which Washington suspects aims to develop atomic weapons. Iran has given an assurance that it would stop enriching uranium to 20 percent purity if world powers agreed to a proposed nuclear fuel swap, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu told reporters in Istanbul.

Four senators are seeking to force the Obama administration to blacklist the Tehreek-e-Taliban, a day after the failed Times Square bomber pleaded guilty and admitted getting training from the group. According to a report, the senators, all from New York and New Jersey, said they would introduce a bill requiring the State Department to designate the Pakistani Taliban a “foreign terrorist organization.” “Now that the Times Square terrorist has pleaded guilty in court, it is time to take the next step by confronting the organization that aided and abetted him,” Senator Charles Schumer said in a statement

Russia Freezes Iran Missile Contract: Russia is freezing a contract to deliver S-300 air defence missiles to Iran after the adoption of the new UN sanctions against Tehran, a source told the Interfax news agency on Thursday. Russia agreed the deal on the missiles several years ago but has never delivered the weapons, amid pressure from the United States and Israel which fear they would dramatically improve Iran’s defensive capabilities. “It is compulsory to fulfill a decision by the UN Security Council and Russia is not an exception here,” said the source in the Federal Service for Military Technical Cooperation (FSVTS), which supervises Russian arms sales.

DUBAI : Yemen rebels freed 178 government soldiers and civilians on Wednesday, a day after Sanaa accused them of dragging their feet over implementation of a truce deal to end a northern war. A top Yemeni security body had said on Tuesday that the northern rebels were not fully complying with a deal struck in February to end a conflict that has raged on and off since 2004 and drew in neighbouring oil exporter Saudi Arabia last year

TEHRAN: Iran said that it was ready to send its uranium abroad for further enrichment as requested by the UN. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced the decision in an interview with state Iranian television. He said Iran will have “no problem” giving the West its low-enriched uranium and taking it back several months later when it is enriched by 20 percent

PORT-AU-PRINCE: Another Strong New Earthquake Hits Haiti New, A second strong earthquake hit Haiti Wednesday, waking people from their beds and sending others running into the streets in panic. The US Geological Survey said the quake measured 6.1, and hit a country already ravaged by an earthquake eight days ago. The tremor was centered 26 miles north-west of Jacmel, and there were no immediate reports of injuries.

TEHRAN : New Uranium Units Not to Confront IAEA: President Ahmadinejad, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Wednesday that Iran’s plan to build 10 new uranium enrichment plants was not aimed at confronting the UN atomic watchdog, which censured Tehran last month. He also said Iran will continue to build the new plants, adding that sites for five of the 10 units had been finalised.
