Former US president George W. Bush began a visit to Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital, to check the progress on Haiti’s post-quake reconstruction. This is the second time Bush visited the quake-ravaged country after a 7.0-magnitude earthquake on 12th January 2010 killed some 300,000 people and left millions homeless.

WASHINGTON: By a vote of 67-28, the US Senate approved a roughly $60 billion bill to pay for the war in Afghanistan for the rest of fiscal 2010, lawmakers’ last piece of business before beginning a one- week recess reported by A Pakistan News . The House must still either pass its own version of the legislation or take up the Senate bill in June, when lawmakers return from the Memorial Day recess.

President Barack Obama announced that he plans to spread the money that accompanies his Nobel Peace Prize among 10 different charities. Obama was awarded the prize based on the hope that his presidency would bring about a change in American foreign policy, had decided soon after being notified of the award that he would donate the $1.4 million award to charity. The prize money would be distributed amongst non-profit organization which include organization that provides housing for families of those receiving medical care at major military and Veterans Affairs medical centers.

TAIPEI: A 6.4 magnitude quake struck southern Taiwan on Thursday, with an epicentre 35 kilometres (22 miles) deep, the US Geological Survey said. No tsunami warning was immediately issued. The quake, which hit about 70 kilometres from the main southern city of Kaohsiung, was felt as far away as the capital Taipei in the north of the island

NEW YORK: Former President Bill Clinton , who had quadruple bypass surgery more than five years ago, was hospitalized Thursday to have a clogged heart artery opened after suffering discomfort in his chest. Two stents resembling tiny mesh scaffolds were placed inside the artery as part of a medical procedure that is common for people with severe heart disease.
