At least 300 people have been killed after a huge earthquake struck the Chilean coast, which triggered a tsunami and sparked warnings for 53 countries. Chile’s President Michelle Bachelet has declared a “state of catastrophe” following the quake, which measured a significant 8.8 on the Richter scale. Warnings have been issued for South American nations as well as Australia and New Zealand, Japan, the Philippines, Russia and many Pacific islands.

A suicide bomber killed 10 people near an upmarket shopping and hotel complex in the heart of Kabul today, while police shot dead two other would-be attackers. A military official said that 10 people were killed and 11 others wounded. An explosion ripped through a coal mine in northwest Turkey, killing 17 workers, Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan said. Forty seven citizens were working 80 meters below ground in that mine. Unfortunately 17 people died and 30 have been under treatment in hospitals, Erdogan said
